SOUSV pot
The SOUSV pot is the first multi-cooker that we have tested. Typically a multi-cooker performs the functions of numerous kitchen devices including a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, yogurt maker, etc. However, it is only recently that manufacturers have begun to add the sous vide function as one of the capabilities of their multi-cooker. In our reviews of multi-cookers we will only be focusing on the sous vide capabilities of the device.
The SOUSV pot is a multi-cooker which includes: sous vide to sear, slow cooker, saute, boil, food steamer, rice cooker, and yogurt maker. It has an internal nonstick coated inter pot which is approximately 8.25 x 8.25 x 6" (21cm x 21cm x 15.2cm). When this is filled with 1.5 gallons (5.6L) of water it performs similar to other sous vide water ovens.
What We Like About SOUSV pot
Unlike most sous vide water ovens the SOUSV pot has "Dual Accutemp Technology", which measures temperature in two critical areas. The top mounted high precision temperature probe (see picture) automatically swings down in Sous Vide mode to take the water temperature directly and accurately. The bottom wideband temperature probe controls cooking over a wide range of temperatures. The two work in tandem to improve all cooking modes, but in particular, they help to maintain a precise temperature for sous viding.
Since the inter pot is removable from the SOUSV pot, it is easy to get it into a sink and clean well. In addition to being able to sous vide food, the SOUSV pot has a saute function which they claim has a maximum temperature of 425°F +/- 25°F and can be used to sear the food as well. In testing using the Etekcity Lasergrip 1080 Laser Infrared Thermometer, we verified that these temperatures, and a bit higher, were attained as advertised.
What We Don't Like About the SOUSV pot
From a sous vide standpoint, the limited size of the inter pot is the biggest drawback of the SOUSV pot. I feel you would be limited to perhaps three chicken breasts or two medium-size steaks.
The temperature stability of the SOUSV pot, similar to most water ovens, had greater temperature variation than most immersion circulators. However, this should not pose a problem for most types of sous vide cooks.
Just one non-sous-vide related comment. Do keep in mind that this multi-cooker does not provide the pressure cooker function found in some of its competition.
Why We Recommend the SOUSV pot
The SOUSV pot would be a good match for someone who needs the other functions provided by this multi-cooker and would also like to perform some sous vide cooking with limited sizes and quantities.
